Bigbury ladies enjoy a sunny captain’s away day

TWENTY-four ladies from Bigbury Golf Club enjoyed a beautiful, sunny game at Tavistock on Tuesday, September 29, for their lady captain’s away day.

Teams of three played a 321 stableford and the winning team was Karen Graddon, Dot Kenneth and Sue Winzer with Nessa Mabelle, Helen Lancina and Sarah West coming a very close second.

Ruth Bickle won the longest drive and Nessa Mabelle had a great day with nearest the pin and the prize for best individual stableford score.

Helen Bertram, lady captain presented the prizes and a small gift for everyone who played and thanked all the team at Tavistock for making it a very enjoyable day - particularly with warm sunshine and clear blue skies.

A mixed Saturday stableford saw Philip Marsh win Division One with 40 points, also taking the gross prize after carding a 73.

Amanda Burchell was second with 37 points and Matt Nadin third, 36 points.

Division Two was won on countback by Colin Atkinson from Martyn Lawrence, both with 39 points and Phil Nile third with 38 points.

Colin Trevethick had a runaway victory in the recent midweek mixed stableford with an excellent 44 points, with Roy Mitchell in second, some distance behind with 36 points and then Fred Nurse, 35 points. There were only two two on the day despite 27 competitors, from Roy Mitchell and Bob Brocklehurst, both on the 17th.

Thurlestone ladies played a Bowmaker County Qualifier competition in teams of three with two scores to count.

The winners were Julia Dorey, Victoria Gibbens & Wendy Stewart with 83, from Trish Gledhill, Jane Mahood & Sally Cahill (76) and then Heather Spencer, Pam Adams and Kathrine Lawrence (75).

On Saturday, Thurlestone hosted a fantastic GolfSixes and Golf Nines event, welcoming juniors from local clubs to compete against one another.

GolfSixes is a fun team format where juniors represent their club over six shortened holes, while Golf Nines allows those progressing with their golf the opportunity to compete individually over nine holes.

It was brilliant to see so many young golfers out on the course enjoying the day, with some great golf played throughout. There was also success for Thurlestone as our very own Lola Sullock winning the Golf Nines event with a fantastic 24 points over nine holes! Lola’s golf has continued to improve, so it was great to see that progress rewarded with such a strong performance.

The older Thurlestone juniors were in a stableford competition as well on Saturday and the winner Leo Willmott had an excellent round and scored 41 points. In second place was Finn Robson with 39 points and third was Jacob Brooker and Harry Robinson, both with 34 points.

There were 40 entries for the midweek medal and Steve Pike was the winner with nett 63 from Andrew Clark (64) and Gus Kemp (64). Congratulations to the players that scored a birdie two: Eoghan Grace, Toby Hirons, Sean Massingham, Ashley Pigott and Steve Pike (two).

Lastly, Craig Blount, David Doyle and Alec Esplin all scored 43 points in the weekend’s stableford with countback separating them in that order. Two of the seven birdie twos were contributed by Peter Eva.

Fog delayed the start of play this week for Dartmouth ladies but didn’t dampen their spirits!

After a few weeks of formal competitions, it was time for something more relaxing. A Bramble seemed the perfect solution, giving everyone in the team the opportunity to play their own ball from the best tee shot.

With two balls to count, the scores were always going to be good, but there was also the incentive of double points for anyone choosing to play from the blue tees.

The team of Shelley Durrans, Jodie Kenyon and Chris Mayer made good use of all possible advantages and came first with 146 points, well ahead of Jan Cousins, Mary Thompson and Anne Woodward on 126.

Despite going out in 20 points, Mark Whitworth finished on 34 points and took second in Division One for the men’s midweek stableford. Steve Atkins beat him to the punch.

In Division Two, Philip Green had no points on his card when he reached the fourth tee but, in a remarkable show of resilience, he kept going to finish second with 30 points. John Garner was ahead of him with 33.

Meanwhile, Steve Blackie edged out Pete Hannaford via countback in the mixed month stableford, both scoring 38 points.

Gary Widdicombe won Division Two with 37 points, just one point ahead of Shelley Durrans.

This week, Dartmouth seniors were challenged to a Stableford qualifier with standard handicap protocols in place.

37 players were in action on a fine day for golf and the winners of the respective divisions were Keith Moffitt and Robert Wotton with Dean Raspin and Colin Cooper also in the mix.

For many, the championship course continues to play tough with penal rough a key feature making meaningful shots that much harder to control but nevertheless it remains in good order and a significant challenge.

Keith and Dean carded 39 points apiece, Colin following on 36 with Robert then one behind on 36.

Also making a splash were Steve Atkins on 35 points and Graham Burton on 34. Desmond Graham was second in Division Two with 33 points.

Birdie twos were scored by Gary Bonser at the fifth and Robert Wotton at hole 18. Many thanks to Nigel Osborne for counting them back.

In other news, Gordon Kidd and Dean Raspin hoisted the Perring Cup aloft after defeating Paul Marels and Kevin Matthews in the final.

The DMVGA Anniversary trophy was played at Yelverton on a three-man Texas scramble basis on Wednesday, September 23. Dartmouth’s team of Malcolm Toone, Tim Cronin and Nigel Osborne finished a creditable 10th of 35 teams with a nett 59.
