Ivybridge Police are cracking down on a 20mph speed limit in the town and say they know when people are trying to ‘hoodwink’ them.
Following patrols in the Harford Road, Cole Lane and surrounding areas, they would like to remind motorists that the speed limit on Harford Road is 20mph.
A spokesperson said: “During our patrols, it was apparent that a significant number of vehicles were travelling in excess of the posted speed limit.
“This is particularly concerning given the volume of pedestrians using these roads and the significant number of school children who are travelling through the area during the morning period.”
There has been public feedback complaining about the visibility and number of signs an they are taking it up with Devon County Council.
The spokesperson continued: “Many vehicles appeared to reduce their speed the moment they became aware of the police presence.
“This would suggest that a large number of drivers are already aware that they are travelling through a 20mph zone.”
Ivybridge Police said in busy areas, particularly during school arrival and departure times, the safest speed may well be lower than 20mph.
The purpose of the limit is to improve safety for everyone using the area.
The spokesperson said: “Concerns continue to be raised by residents about speeding and driving standards and what we observed during our patrols indicates that these concerns are justified.
“We will continue to monitor the area, carry out high-visibility patrols, gather data, and work with our road safety partners to improve compliance.”
Work in this area is continuing and will be increasing in the coming weeks.
They would like to thank those residents who have taken the time to raise concerns and engage constructively.
The public’s reports help them identify issues and focus their efforts where they are most needed.
