A man’s body has been recovered from a South Hams river.

Police was alerted at 11am to reports of a body in the River Dart.

This follows reports before Christmas that 44-year-old ferryman Jason Wickenden, from Dartmouth, had gone missing.

He was last seen at around 9.15pm on December 20.

A police spokesman said: "This morning police received a 999 call to attend the River Dart, Dartmouth, to a report of a person in the water.

"HM Coastguard were alerted and Dartmouth RNLI lifeboat was dispatched to the scene where the body of a man was recovered from the water.

"No formal identification has taken place, but the family of Jason Wickenden who went missing before Christmas have been informed of the incident."

Dartmouth Coastguard said: "We were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard following a report of a person in the water on the River Dart. Dart RNLI Lifeboat was launched and proceeded to the scene where the body of a man was recovered from the water.

"Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this sad time."

We will update this story if we get any further information.
