With a further bank closure scheduled for June, the town will be left with only two banks.
In Totnes, Barclays has revealed that it will close its doors on Friday, June 22, 2018, meaning that for Barclays customers, the closest bank will be almost six miles away.
At the Totnes branch, the customer usage has “declined by 27 per cent” over the last two years and “82 per cent” of the customers have been using other ways to do their banking such as online and over the telephone, explained Michael.
The director for Devon and Cornwall said the bank identified that “only 62 customers use the counter to exclusively undertake their banking”.
“We hope that the availability of our nearest Barclays branch at 6-8 Palace Avenue, Paignton, access to services at the local Post Offices located at Premier Express, 39 Fore Street, Totnes and 1-2 Christina Parade, Totnes, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”
The local Barclays branches remaining open include Paignton, Torquay and Newton Abbot which are situated 5.9 miles, 8.4 miles and 8.6 miles away respectively.
Once the bank has closed, customers will be able to undertake everyday transactions at the Post Office and Barclays invite anyone who is concerned about this to contact them.
In addition, a ‘tea and teach’ session at the Totnes branch will be held for customers looking to explore digital banking.
District Cllr John Green said the council is pushing for a mobile bank to be put in place in Totnes.
At the town council meeting last Monday, he said he had received a reply explaining that a mobile banking replacement was unlikely to be created. But the district councillor was hopeful that there would soon be a meeting organised with Barclays to discuss how residents can be assisted with their banking.
