As a relatively new Totnes resident, I have been shocked at the level of car fumes in the main street, particularly on a sunny day and even when parents are wheeling toddlers and babies up and down the street exactly at exhaust pipe level.

If we needed any reminders of the dangers of toxic fumes we have had them with the two recent reports that have found conclusively that exhaust fumes from vehicles not only damage our lungs and heart but seep into a blood and pollute our whole bodies. Even worse, we now we know these toxic fumes can cross the blood-brain barrier.

These exhausts, particularly diesel exhaust fumes, also stunt the growth of children and can harm the development of a foetus in the womb.

The danger in Totnes high street is exacerbated by the narrowness of the street and the height of the buildings on either side.

This streetscape is perfect for containing the fumes for even longer than in the majority of high streets.

Given these facts, who now is responsible for ensuring that we can walk up our high street without being constantly harmed?

Many will say it is too difficult – that the traders need customers and deliveries.

However, research shows traders benefit from pedestrianisation, as many people want to shop in relative safety and peace.

A delegated delivery van could be installed to meet up with agents at the bottom of the street to ensure quick and regular deliveries to all shops.

Surely our elected representatives should be taking urgent action to ensure this real immediate danger to our health and children’s development is removed.

If not, it is very likely that someone in future will be held accountable in the courts for this appalling dereliction of duty.
