Seven people have been caught fly-tipping by temporary surveillance cameras installed at known hotspots across the South Hams.

The cameras have also captured an alleged arson incident and five cases of littering, according to South Hams District Council (SHDC).

The council says the cameras have been “hugely successful so far”, with two incidents of fly-tipping caught on camera to date.

The equipment was deployed at locations identified as being particularly vulnerable to illegal dumping as part of the Clean Community Strategy, with footage being used to support enforcement investigations and identify those responsible.

Those caught could face enforcement action, including on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notices of up to £5,000 or prosecution, which can result in an unlimited fine.

Cllr Victor Abbott, Executive Member for Community Services, Operations and Leisure, said: “I’m delighted to hear that the surveillance cameras have been so effective already.

“Fly-tipping is a persistent nuisance in the district, harming wildlife and natural habitats, creating an eyesore in our beautiful area and costing taxpayers thousands of pounds each year in clean-up and investigation costs.

“The use of these cameras has helped us to gather evidence and identify those responsible. We are sending a clear message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated in the South Hams.”

Cllr Abbott added: “We would also encourage anyone who witnesses or discovers fly-tipping to report it to us so that we can continue to target problem areas and bring those responsible to account.”

SHDC says the surveillance is being carried out in accordance with data protection legislation, with footage used only for legitimate enforcement purposes.

Residents using private waste contractors are also being warned that they can still be held responsible if their waste is subsequently fly-tipped.

Before handing waste to a contractor, residents are advised to check that they have a valid waste carrier licence, note the vehicle registration number and obtain a completed waste transfer note.
