THE grand Christmas lights switch on by Year 6 pupils at Totnes St John’s Primary marked the start of a busy and exciting build up to the festive period.

Early Years Foundation and KS1 youngsters performed the nativity story for their fellow pupils, staff and families.

And everyone was involved in preparing for the school’s annual Christmas fair, with each child making something to celebrate the special time of year.

Deputy headteacher, Rachel Patterson-Azzopardi, said: “The older children helped to run stalls and the Y6 children even ran an enterprise event to see which group could make the most profit.

“The fair was a huge success and, thanks to everyone's efforts- not least the amazing St John's Parents Teachers Friends Association - it raised more than £1,000 for the school.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome the children and families back into school whilst also inviting the local community in to enjoy the fun and festivities.

“A highlight for the children was welcoming Mother Christmas and her helpful elves!”

A choir formed of KS2 children were honoured to be invited to attend and perform at St John’s Church carol service, and during the final week of term children in Years 1, 2 and 5 visited Quayside retirement complex to sing carols which the residents joined in with and perform a poem about remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

Children from Year 5 also sang carols during Totnes’ popular late night shopping evenings.

The last week of the school year was rounded off with a school Christmas dinner.
