As a Totnesian born and bred, although I have lived in Plymouth for the past 66 years, I am totally opposed to the war memorial being moved from its current position, where it has been since 1921.

My grandfather, the late Alderman Robert Drennam, former mayor of Totnes, was involved in the memorial being sited there. Also, I knew many of the relatives of those named on the memorial, those who have no known grave.

My father, the late Fred Baker, served in the First World War at the Battle of the Somme and if he was alive today I am sure he would be against the proposal.

I remember, in 1947, as a 15-year-old, the memorial being rededicated.
