I was pleased to see the Government recently publish its plan for an independent fisheries policy.

The plan, called Sustainable Fisheries for Future Generations, will help to protect and enhance the fishing industry in Devon and revitalise our coastal communities.

When we leave the EU, the UK will be an independent coastal state, regaining control of our waters and natural resources. We will have the flexibility to negotiate with other countries and ensure stocks are fished sustainably.

Fishing is the lifeblood of coastal communities across Devon, but for too long our fishermen and women have received a poor deal based on fishing patterns from the 1970s.

Some people may be surprised to learn that EU member states currently land around eight times as much fish in UK waters than we do in their waters.

Leaving the EU and the Common Fisheries Policy will present a host of opportunities for the local fishing industry.

The Government’s plan, which has been welcomed by industry bodies, sets out a clear vision to make fishing more sustainable and support the next generation of fishermen and women, while protecting our precious marine environment.

The future is bright.
