I’ve had enough. I have just read several letters in the Totnes Times from people getting increasingly angry at Remoaners and our MP Sarah Wollaston, in particular, over the handling of Brexit. These include Martin McGowan-Scanlon, Ceri Jayes and William Garman, though I do disagree with William on his opinion that there will be a second referendum.

Imagine if there was a second referendum on Brexit and it followed the Irish tradition of changing the result. It would split the Tory Party beyond repair and we would get UKIP instead. And why not? UKIP would get us what we want. Out of the EU. Think I am exaggerating? Which party won the very last EU election? UKIP. “Beware the wrath of a silent man,” so the saying goes. There are a lot of previously silent people out there but as these letters pages demonstrate they are getting louder. The louder they get the bigger UKIP becomes.

Remoaners claim the Brexit result was too close at 52/48. Seriously? In a democracy, the majority is 50 per cent plus one or more. I remember a few years ago just down the road in Torbay Liberal Democrat Adrian Sanders won a general election by just six votes. Was that too close? There were recounts, but never another vote. The Brexit victory, like Adrian’s, was more than enough.

Parliament is too small for us all to cram in debate and enact important national issues and we mostly have better things to do like creating the wealth that pays for government to do so.

So we elect representatives to take our collective decision making to Parliament for us as MPs.

In our case, the constituency of Totnes elected Dr Sarah Wollaston, originally a dedicated Brexiteer and now an equally dedicated Remoaner. Why the sudden and diametrically opposite switch Sarah? Did David Cameron offer you something that changed your mind so dramatically? Because you have certainly not come up with a plausible reason for exchanging the freedom, independence and democracy that you justifiably preached before for enslavement in foreign domination under threat of project fear.

As our representative, we, the people, have given you our mandate to pursue Brexit to its conclusion. Nationally by 52/48, and in your own Totnes constituency by the wider margin of 54/46. You are our voice in government and we have told you what we want. Get us out of the EU. It is not vague enough for you to have an opinion or use your own judgement. It is not a suggestion or a request. It is an instruction. Do as you are told.
