A five-year-old bulldog has been taken in by Gables Dogs & Cats Home and needs £2,500 worth of life-changing surgery to help her breathe.
Dumpling, a British Bulldog, suffers from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which has left her with restricted breathing.
She also needs surgery to remove her corkscrew tail, which is causing her problems and is another condition associated with the health issues often suffered by flat-faced breeds.
Dumpling is also carrying too much weight and needs to lose around 4kg. Gables said her extra weight is putting further pressure on her already compromised breathing, and staff are working to help her safely reach a healthier weight.
She also suffers from itchy skin and currently requires medication, including Apoquel, to manage her discomfort.
Ruth Rickard, deputy manager at Gables, said: “Despite everything she is facing, she is a lovely dog with so much life still ahead of her.
“With the right veterinary treatment, surgery, weight loss and ongoing care, her future could look very different.
“We are appealing to our amazing supporters to help raise the £2,500 needed for her surgery. Every donation will help us get her one step closer to receiving the treatment she desperately needs.”
Gables Dogs & Cats Home does not receive government funding and relies on donations from the public to care for animals in need.
People can support Dumpling's appeal by donating through Gables' website, JustGiving or PayPal, or by calling the charity on 01752 331602.
Donations can also be made by post to Gables Dogs & Cats Home, 204 Merafield Road, Plymouth, PL7 1UQ.
Those unable to donate are being encouraged to share Dumpling's appeal with friends, family and on social media.
Any money raised above the £2,500 target will go towards Gables' general funds to help other animals in its care.
