AN EXCITING new theatre company is closing its inaugural season of lunchtime performances with ‘Land’s End’ by Garry Norris at the weekend.
Earlier this year, former King Edward VI Community College student, theatre director Danielle McIlven returned to her hometown of Totnes to set up the Moveable Type Theatre Company.
She has since staged a number of plays at the Barrel House Ballroom inspired by the trailblazing Glasgow theatre project ‘A Play, A Pie and a Pint – with a drink and a pasty included in the ticket price.
From 12noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday August 19 to 21, Paddy O’Toole and Jade Patrick will play Ethan and Lou, two teenagers fleeing a secure children’s home in rural Devon on a mission to escape their past and reach Land’s End.
Danielle said: “We have worked with local actors and creatives to bring new writing to Totnes. We wanted to create a relaxed and open atmosphere in the Barrel House Ballroom, to invite audiences to see something new, to break down any sense that theatre can be elitist and to showcase a range of stories.
“I am particularly excited by this final play as we are hoping to draw in teenagers and young adults who will see performers a little older than them.
“It’s also wonderful to be part of the Totnes and Bridgetown Festival.’
Although this is the final play of the summer, Moveable Type will be back at the Barrel House in November with more lunchtime theatre.
Danielle is also planning a programme of classes and activities, kicking off with a playwriting programme in September, followed by acting classes and a theatre making company for 16 to 25 year old later in the year.
