With April 26 marking the 32nd anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline wants to express gratitude to all of the volunteers throughout the years.
In a letter, CCLL’s Chief Executive, Dennis Vystavkin gives thanks to volunteers and, despite the fact that the Soviet town of Pripyat has become a “thing of the past”, wants everyone to remember that for many victims of the disaster, most of whom hadn’t even been born yet, it is still very much a reality.
He says, “However, there are also thousands of people like you who care passionately about the affected children and their families still suffering in one way or another from the Chernobyl consequences for whom this will be a sad reality for years to come. To them this is a current issue which they live with daily.
"CCLL continues to operate and develops new ways of delivering help and assistance to those in need thanks to our great volunteers. I would like to thank you and every member of your link, your supporters and donors for the utter dedication and continuous efforts directed at helping these children.
“To many families in Belarus and Ukraine you are their only last resort! The hope that you give is what supports them daily. The knowledge that you exist and the love that you share with their children sends them a very clear message that there are people out there who still remember about their problems.
“The Chernobyl Disaster caused a whole array of very complex, long-lasting issues which require rather sophisticated long-term and very expensive solutions. Please continue raising the awareness as the work you do is unique, much needed, and of course is truly appreciated!”
The Belarusian children are set to arrive for their annual visit on June 24.
