Rotary’s End Polio campaign flowering

By Toby Leigh in Local People

Totnes has been turning purple this spring – thanks to an international charity effort to wipe out polio.

Last year, quarter of a million crocuses of the purple Ruby Giants variety were planted across Devon and Cornwall to raise public awareness of the End Polio Now campaign led by the Rotary organisation and the World Health Organisation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Totnes Rotary Club donated 5,000 corms to local schools and organisations who quickly got busy planting them around the town.

This spring the flowers have been appearing in swathes of purple – along with signs to explain to people why they were planted.
